Getting Started

Registration

Registration allows you to establish a user name and password so you can save MPG information and view, edit, and update it at a later time. Registered users can also share their MPG with others. Fueleconomy.gov retains no information that could be used to identify individuals or link them to any information they enter.

To register

  1. Click "I want to register!" in the Login box on the My MPG home page.

Selecting 'I want to register' from the My MPG Login box

The "User Registration" form will then be displayed.

    Entering a user name

  2. Enter a user name of your choosing.

  3. Enter a password.

  4. Re-enter the password in the "Password Confirmation" field to ensure that you typed the same password twice.

  5. Indicate whether or not you would like to share your MPG with other users. (more about sharing…)

Filling out the User Registration form

If you elect to share, you can

    1. Enter your e-mail address.

We will send you an e-mail asking you to verify that you would like to share your MPG. The e-mail address will be deleted from our database after you respond or within two weeks if you do not. It will not be shared or used by us for any reason. The verification process must be completed before MPG data can be shared.

    2. Indicate the state in which you live (this step is optional).

If you do not want to share your MPG, you can skip this step and continue to the next one.

  6. Click the Register button.

If you enter a User Name that has already been used, you will receive an error message asking you to select a different User Name. You can repeat the steps above until you select a name that has not been used.

If you enter an e-mail address that has already been used, you will receive an error message asking you to enter a different one. You can repeat the steps above until you select an address that has not been used. (This should not occur unless you have already registered.)

  7. A page will be displayed allowing you to indicate whether or not you would like fueleconomy.gov to keep your e-mail address so that we can e-mail your password and user name to you if you forget it.

Form allowing users to indicate whether or not they would like us to keep their e-mail address on file

Fueleconomy.gov only collects e-mail addresses to verify that users would like to share their MPG estimates. Users that ask to have their e-mail address retained can have a new password sent to them if they forget theirs in the future.

Indicate whether or not your would like us to retain your e-mail, and click the Continue button.

My MPG then prompts you to add a vehicle to your garage. The "My Garage" page is your home base for managing the vehicles you would like to track. From "My Garage" you can

  • Add and delete vehicles
  • Set your driving style for each vehicle
  • Add, edit, or view fuel purchase records for each vehicle
  • Add, edit, or view MPG estimates for each vehicle

Sharing MPG Estimates with Others

We have provided a way for users to share their on-road fuel economy with others.

We require users to provide an e-mail address, so we can send them an e-mail asking them to verify that they would like to share.

MPG estimates will only be shared if you respond to the verification e-mail. Your e-mail address will be erased from the database in 30 days unless you request that we keep it on record in case you forget your password. It will not be used in any other way.

If you decide to share, you can also indicate the state where the vehicle is driven, since weather and terrain can affect MPG.

Important: Newly added MPG data is neither shared nor used to calculate the national average MPG for that vehicle until it goes through an error-checking process. This process is typically performed each week.

Understanding the difference between Fuel Purchases and MPG Estimates

My MPG helps you track your MPG in two primary ways:

  1. You can enter fuel purchase information (miles traveled, fuel used, etc.) and let My MPG calculate your MPG for you.
  2. You can directly enter MPG estimated or calculated by you, your vehicles, or some other means.

If you already know your fuel economy, enter one or more MPG estimates.

If you want to calculate your MPG from fuel purchase information, enter at least two consecutive fuel purchase records where you fill your tank completely, and let us calculate the MPG for you. Some users track some or all of their fuel purchases over time to get a better average estimate or to see how much it fluctuates under various driving conditions.

Managing Your Account & Vehicles

After you register, you can manage your password and share preferences from the My Profile dropdown on the My MPG menu. You can manage your vehicles from the My Garage page. Steps for performing these activities are provided below. Directions for adding and editing MPG estimates and fuel purchase records are described in other sections.

Adding a Vehicle

You can add vehicles to your garage by selecting the vehicle's model year, make, model, and configuration from our vehicle database.

The fueleconomy.gov database currently includes cars and trucks from model year 1985 to the present. Larger trucks, vans, and SUVs not subject to fuel economy standards are not included in our database.

To add a vehicle

  1. On the "My Garage" page, click the green Add a Vehicle to My Garage button.

Adding a vehicle to the garage

This will take you to the "Add a Vehicle to My Garage" form.

    Selecting the vehicle's configuration

To select the correct configuration, you may need to know specific information about your vehicle, such as transmission type (automatic or manual), number of cylinders, engine size (3.0 Liter, 3.5 Liter), drive type (two-wheel, four-wheel, or all-wheel drive), and other characteristics.

If unsure, you can select your best guess and check the box that says "I'm not sure my selected option is correct." You can change the vehicle information later from the "My Garage" page.

If unsure of an abbreviation used in the engine and transmission description, you can click on "Explanation of Engine and Transmission Descriptors" for more information.

  3. Click the Select button at the bottom of the form.

The newly added vehicle should appear in your vehicle list on the "My Garage" page.

Understanding Fuel Purchase Gaps

Fuel purchase gaps are only needed if you use the Odometer (rather than Trip Odometer) Fuel Purchase form.

The odometer method calculates the miles you traveled since your last fill-up and divides by the number of gallons used to fill the tank—or kWh needed to recharge. So, you need to record two consecutive fill-ups where you fill the tank or re-charge completely in order to calculate MPG.

If you enter a fuel purchase and didn't enter the one before it, you need to add a Gap before it so that we can properly calculate your MPG. Otherwise, the number of miles traveled will be too high and your MPG will not be accurate.

The steps used to insert a Gap record are provided below.

To insert a gap record to indicate a missing fuel purchase record

  1. On the My Garage page, click the blue options button () next to the desired vehicle and select View/Edit Fuel Purchases from the dropdown menu.
